Project structure

The project included the following tasks:

1. Obtaining information about the current state of motoring in the Czech Republic and in Prague (Automotive Industry Union of CR, Urban Informatics Institute, Prague)

2. Determining to what extent the populace is aware of the adverse environmental impact of motoring and if it is informed about the positive impact of chemistry in this field preparing and evaluating a questionnaire survey)

3. Car fuels - production, composition, developmental trends in refinery technologies, fuel transport by pipe lines (excursion to the oil refinery in Kralupy, journals Chemický pr?mysl (Chemical Industry), Chemické listy (Chemical Letters)

4. Laboratory fuel tests - gas chromatographic analysis (visit to refinery plant laboratories, collaboration with laboratories at the Institute of Chemical Technology and its part, the Department of Oil Technology and Petrochemistry)

5. Emissions - production, measurement, effect of fuel composition on emission composition, use of catalytic converters for removing harmful substances from emissions (excursions to the monitoring facility, consultations with experts from the Institute of Chemical Technology, relevant literature)

6. Car oils - importance, composition, laboratory tests (co-operation with the Fuel and Lubricant Research Institute in Prague, work in the school laboratory)

7. Other fluids necessary for car operation (corporate literature)

8. Storage batteries - principle of lead battery function, other battery types, electromobiles (a storage battery manufacturing company AFA in Česká Lípa, relevant literature)

9. Steel corrosion, anticorrosive protection (excursion to the Škoda car manufacturing plant, relevant literature)

10. Survey of other materials used in car manufacture showing that all are produced mostly by chemical processes (literature, research establishments)

11. Tyres - see the 1997 project

12. Cars as waste (Czech Institute for Ecology - computer survey, car scrap yards)

The project will focus especially on passenger cars as they are the most numerous and their emissions cause considerable problems. For this reason, the largest attention among fuels will be paid to car gasolines.
