The European Chemical Industry belives that its future prosperity rests on the quality of the science education of Europe`s people. A thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of science and an appreciation of the impact of technology on our lives, and on the nature of the society in which we live, is alredy essential for survival in the modern world. European society cannot "opt out", but must equip itself to survive and prosper.

It is in this spirit that CEFIC has created its annual award for "Excellence in Science Education". This award helps to:

• promote excellence in the teaching of science
• recognise the importance of teachers as major opinion-formers and show our desire for partnership with them
• build on the natural curiosity of young people about science
• show the industry`s willingness to be involved as a player equal to others in the community
• demonstrate our support fort scientists.

The award

The award recognises excellence in science education, achieved by a teacher and a group of students. It is made on the basis of project dossier created by the teacher and the pupils, witch demonstrates both effectiveness in teaching and effective learning by the students.

• Prize winners have been selected from a group of national champions by an international panel of independent judges. Winners have been selected from 38 finalists, submitted by nineteen participating national federations from more than 200 entries.
• For the 1996 award, students in secondary education have been chosen with a particular focus on the age group 10 - 17 years. Forr subsequent awards, different age groups may be chosen.
• Particular emphasis has been given to science education projects which have been carried out in close co-operation with local chemical industry units, where these exist.
