Our Project

7. People at Our School.

Martin goes to bin. E-mail:majer@mssch.czPeople at our school are the students and the staff. There are about 220 students this year, though the capacity is over 400. The students are divided into 12 classes (forms), three classes in each year. This year we have not the fourth year (grade). The number of students in classes varies from 15 to 30. Next year much more students are expected to attend the school. The photographs show three classes, the students of which participate in Socrates/ Comenius Project.

We are all in the third year, so we are 17 - 19 years old. Each class has its form teacher, who checks the attandance, keeps contact with parents, keeps files on students, scolds his students, when they are naughty, writes school reports and is responsible for the order in the classroom. One of his duties is to support his class at sport competitions.

Teacher

As you can see in the photos boys and girls are half and half. Sometimes relations within the class are very close.

The staff are the headmaster, his deputy, teachers, assistants, clerks, a caretaker (She is a most important person in the school - sitting right of the headmaster in the photo), cooks, a fixer etc.

As we are a small school, there are only 13 full-time and 8 part-time teachers in the school this year. By law teachers teach 21 lessons a week. If they work more, they are paid for it extra. The average age of our teachers is 45 years. The average monthly salary in 1998 was 13 222,- Kč (the average salary in the country was 11 688,-Kč)

Teaching is a hard work. After a tiring day some teachers are really exhausted and may look quite strange, like this Maths teacher in the photo.

The headmaster Mr Michal Běhounek runs the school, hunts for money for the school, checks the work of the teachers. Besides he also teaches mathematics, but only in one class.

His deputy Mr Jiří Zajíček teaches chemistry, makes a timetable, looks for sponsors and many other things. He is busy all the time. His surname means "a little hare", so he likes being photographed with his mascot.

8. Everyday Life.

A normal day starts at 7.45. We have about 6 - 7 lessons a day. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes. There are breaks between the lessons which vary from 5 to 20 minutes. There are also some gaps between the lessons because the timetable is not very good. What do we do on the intervals and gaps ? Probably like you we simply talk, relax, go to the toilet, prepare for the next lesson, do our homework and eat our snacks. We can buy a cup of coffee, a sandwich or a mug of instant soup in our school shop.

Smoking is forbidden inside and outside the school. Even the teachers do not smoke, although they are allowed to. So if the smoke addict urgently needs his drug, he has to go round the corner of the building and have a smoke there. We are a "nonsmoker school".

The subjects taught at our school are both general and special. The general ones are Czech language and literature, mathematics, physics, English or German, history, biology, geography, P.T., civics. There is no religion. The choice of special subjects differs in different classes according to the specializations. We have a large choice of chemistry subjects and we also spend several hours in labs. In the lyceum classes chemistry is just one of many subjects (in fact it belongs to the general subjects), but we have more maths, physics and computer lessons.

P.T. lessons are indoors in winter and outdoors in autumn and spring.

As for the lunch we can have it in the school canteen and we can choose between two warm dishes and vegetarians can also get their veg.

Once or twice a week we can stay at school after lessons and have the disposal of the internet. We have to pay a little money for using it.
